    Notes:

(Research):1975 Letter from Blanche Barbour Starney to David R. Taylor.
She had a family bible from David Bell and Mary Read.
George Read, born 16 Dec. 1693, St. Philip's Parish, Island of Barbadoes, he was married August 1714 to Anne Scott by the Rev. John H. Courtman on Barbadoes. First mention of George in Carteret records, of which I am aware, is the item in St. Johns Paish Book dated 30 April 1742. In Carteret Deed Books D, E, & F he signed deeds as Clerk of Court 1743 through 1754. In Colonial Records Vol. 4, page 635, record is made of a land grant to George Read 25 July 1743. George wrote his will May 26, 1753, probated Sept. 1755, so he probably died August 1755. He mentions in his will: wife Anne, Son Robert, dau. Anne who was wife of John Morgan, daughter Martha who was wife of Israel Christian, dau. Frances who was under 16 & dau. Sarah under 14. (One John Morgan died 1766 in Carteret Co. This could be Anne's husband. If she was 2 yrs. younger than Robert and was born in 1732, she would have been 34 in 1766 when John died, if he were her husband. His will mentions only children: Mark, William, Mary, and Dorothy, no wife.) Colonial & State Records of N.C. Vol. 22, page 263, June 14, 1747 mentions that George Read was Clerk of the Regiment of Colonial Militia under Col. Thomas Lovick. Carteret Deed Book D, page 349, shows that on Feb. 25, 1743 George Read bought from Joshua Nash 112 acres on Shepards Creek, south side of Newport River, for 95 pounds "in bills of ye province". 25 July 1743 George Read at a Council Meeting at Edenton petitioned for a land grant of 300 acres in Carteret County, N.C. Colonial Records, Vol 4, page 635. He also bought 30 July 1751 from George Cogdell 45 acres near Shepards Creek: Book E, page 271-73, which probably joined the property he bought from Joshua Nash on Sheppards Creek.
