  Rieste #52 (Lutheran) (Research):Markkötter = a poor farmer who's land consisted of a small plot within the "Mark" [village boundaries] with a small cottage on it. Generally, a Markkotter's land was not of adequate size or quality to support his family and he had to supplement his farming income by doing some other type of work.
