    • Story from Virgil in a letter to Doris Welp Russell about her wedding day.
" You may or may not remember when Lucy and I along with Aunt Manda and Uncle Theodore came to Campbell Hill for the wedding.  Our trip back to St. Louis that night was one of horror.  The lights went out on Uncle Theodores car and I tried to fix them and finally located a short under the car but the generator had gone bad and as I worked on it a state highway patrol man stopped and took  me to a neighboring town where he woke the garage owner and i got the part I needed and he took me back to the cars.  When I got the car running I started to thank him and he held out his hand which I was going to shake but he told me that was twenty dollars.  A shock as I thought that fell within his duties but I paid him.  About twenty miles further and my car started acting up as it had jumped timing so I worked on it and we proceeded on our way but had to make a number of stops to readjust the timing.  That was a trip I will always remember.  You may have heard the story before but not from me."  (note-twenty dollars in 1947 was a lot of money)
