    • 14 Jun 1851: William Rafert born in Prussia in the town of Minden, age 24 on 28 May 1849, mgrated from Bremen 25 Sept 1845 and arrived in the U.S. on 7 Dec 1845. Sworn and admitted on this date in Indianapolis, Marion County, IN

      Shortly after his naturalization Williarm returned to Germany. He then accompanied his parents and siblings along with others from Meinsen, including his future wife, on board the ship Espindola, which arrived in New York on 17 Sep 1852.

      His family lived on South Delaware Street just south of Merrill Street.

      Mr. Rafert came to Indianapolis about 1847, and his first employement was as a farm hand, but later he worked at Ferguson's Pork House, where he was a meat salter for a good many years. He was next employed in a wholesale house, and was a very popular drayman as long as he was able to do hard work. During his long life of labor he saved sufficient to take care of him in his old age, and he died respected by all who knew him. After he worked here a few years he returned to Germany for his sweetheart, married her and brought her to Indianapolis. In politics he was a Democrat, but never aspired to any office. Both he and his wife were consistent members of the Lutheran Church, and he died April 17, 1903. His wife survives him, and has been an invalid for many years. The children born to Mr. and Mrs. Rafert were: Philapena, now Mrs. William Claftin, Carrie; William; Mary, widow of F. Wallace; Charles, a drayman; George at home with his mother; and Otto, clerking.
