    • Jonathan II was indentured in 1750 to sea Capt. William Coale, and both
      men ended up in Carteret around 1752, where they became noted mariners,
      delivering goods such as sugar and indigo to New York and other ports. ( Email from Mark Hibbs dated 2 Oct 2003).

      A DEED OF SALE FOR FIFTY SIX ACRES OF LAND FROM JOHN SANDERS TO JONATHAN HIBBS WAS PROVED BY THE OATH OF WILLIAM COLE AND ORDERED TO BE REGISTERED.

      MARY WADE, WIDOW OF VALENTINE WADE DECD, MOVED TO THIS COURT FOR LETTERS OF ADMINISTRATION AND GRANTED. ORDER THAT THE SECRETARY HAVE NOTICE THEREOF THAT LETTERS MAY ISSUE, AND AT THE SAME TIME ENTERED INTO BOND WITH DAVID WALLACE AND JONATHAN HIBBS IN THE SUM OF FIVE HUNDRED POUNDS PROC MONEY, ALSO QUALIFIED ACCORDING TO LAW, AND RETURNED INTO COURT ON OATH THE INVENTORY OF THE ESTATE OF THE SAID DECEASED.

      Jonathan Hibbs of Carteret County sold to Thomas Temple 56 acres of land on Bogue Sound at William Wilkins eastmost bounds. Signed by Jonathan Hibbs and his wife Annasophia Hibbs. Witnessed by Nuel Bell and John Ganer. Proven in June Court 1782. (Deed Book I, page 314-315.

      DEED OF GIFT FROM JONATHAN HIBBS TO JAMES HIBBS FOR 102 ACRES ON BOGUE SOUND PROVED BY THE OATH OF ANN HIBBS AND ORDERED TO BE REGISTERED.

      Record of Wills, Book A 1800-1825 Onslow County, North Carolina In the name of God, Amen: I, Jonathan Hibbs (Sr.) of Onslow County in the State of North Carolina, being of sound mind & memory & calling to mind the mortality of my body, that it is appointed for all men once to die, do make & ordain this my last will & testament in manner & form following: I commit my soul unto the hands of God that gave it, hoping through the mercy of blessed Saviour to receive free pardon of all my sins & my body I commit to the earth from whence it was taken & as to such worldly estate as it hath pleased God to endow me with, I dispose of in the following manner, to wit: First: I give to my three sons, Wilkins Hibbs, Jonathan Hibbs (Jr.) & David Hibbs, the land I now possess on New River, being the land I bought of Joseph Morgan, to be equally divided quantity & quality. The east side of my said land I give & bequeath to my son Wilkins Hibbs, to him and his heirs forever. 2ndly: I give to my son Jonathan Hibbs (Jr.) the land joining my son Wilkins Hibbs, to him & his heirs forever. 3rdly: I give & bequeath to my son David Hibbs the westerly part of said land which said land I leave to be laid off that each child may have a privilege of the river, to him & his heirs & assigns forever. 4thly: I give to my beloved wife Anna Sophia Hibbs her lifetime on the aforesaid land given. 5thly: I give to my wife Anna Sophia Hibbs a Negro boy named Cuff during her natural life & after her death, I leave the aforesaid Negro to be equally divided among my sons, (viz.), John Hibbs, Wilkins Hibbs, Jonathan Hibbs and David Hibbs, to them & their heirs forever. 6thly: I give to my wife Negro girl named Darkis & after her decease, I leave her to my daughter Elizabeth Hibbs, to her & her heirs forever. 7thly: I give to my wife a Negro girl named Rose during her natural life & after her decease, I leave her to my daughter Ann Hibbs, to her & her heirs & assigns forever. 8thly: I give to my daughter Elizabeth Hibbs one feather bed, one cow & calf, to her & her heirs & assigns forever. 9thly: I give & bequeath to my daughter Ann Hibbs one featherbed, one cow & calf, to her and her heirs & assigns forever. 10thly: I give to my son John Hibbs the plantation whereon he now lives on Bogue Sound containing one hundred & two acres, to him & his heirs forever. 11thly: I give to my son Jonathan Hibbs (Jr.) one mare colt called Gimme (probably Jimmy), to him & his heirs forever. 12thly: I give to my son David Hibbs one colt called Pleasant, to him and his heirs forever. 13thly: I give to my wife all the rest of my personal estate during her life and after her decease, I give the same amongst all my children, to them & their heirs & assigns forever. Lastly, I nominate & appoint William Wilkins Taylor executor & my wife executrix of this my last will, revoking all other will or wills by me made, ratifying & confirming this and no other to be my last will & testament, in witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand & seal this 31st day of December in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred & eighty nine.
