- (Research):When found in the UK, Gough and Gooch are considered Welsh, with Gough being found mainly in the English border counties with Wales - Shropshire, Herefordshire and also Wiltshire. It means red haired or red faced. The earliest record is found in Cheshire - Robert Gough 1327. Gough is the anglicised version of Gooch. You also find the word 'le' used with early British surnames due to the Norman influence after the invasion of 1066. Some records show the surname in Barbados as le Gouche.
