    • Two William Gardners?!!!    One listed as husband of Hannah Sloan, daughter of James Sloan.  This Wm. was born about 1751 and may be Wm. in Rev. War.  Another Wm. was born bef 1744 who recieved land in 1765 from Biggerstaff.
    • (Research):William Gardner received 400 acres from Elizabeth Biggerstaff and Benjamin Biggerstaff, executors of Samuel Biggerstaff (decd) on 15/16 April 1765.  Described as..on head waters of Paw Creek and Gum Branch, adj Silvins and Joys lines...granted to Francis Beatey on 19 Apr 1763, conveyed to Samuel Biggerstaff on 31 Jan 1764.  [Records of Mecklenburg County, NC, Vol 2, p. 37]

      first as a volunteer in the County of Mecklenburg N. C. town of Charlotte, in the month of November on or about the 20th day, 1778 \endash           in a company commanded by Captain William Houston \endash           Lieutenant Stephen Alexander, Ensign William Gardner, in the Regiment under Colonel Francis Locke, under General Griffith Rutherford-- volunteered for five months

      From Rev War Pension of George Barnhardt
      "...was afterwards drafted in Mecklenburg County North Carolina [in the] month of September 1781 \endash           under Captain William Gardener \endash           Lieutenant Robert Patterson \endash           Ensign Peter Quilman, -- Major James White, Col. Phifer \endash           (till we reached Black River in N. C.)-- then Colonel Loftin [sic, Lofton?] \endash           General Griffith Rutherford was drafted for three months \endash           went under these officers to Wilmington North Carolina where we deposited a number of Tory prisoners that had been taken on our route to Wilmington. I served out this three months and was regularly discharged by Captain William Gardner in the month of December 1781."

      I again volunteered in the same County & State in September 1780 under Captain William Gardner \endash           Colonel Alexander as a minute man and was continually in the service chiefly against the Tories till August 1781 [balance of line obliterated] officers during this time whose names I do not recollect but he served this eleven months and was discharged by Col. Alexander. I again volunteered in the month of September in the County of Mecklenburg N. C. for three months in a company commanded by Captain William Gardner \endash           Lieutenant Robert Patterson, Major White, Col. Phifer and General
      Rutherford \endash           marched to Wilmington N.C. \endash           near which place we heard of the surrender and capture of Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown \endash           served out the three months and was discharged in December 1781 by Captain Gardner.
