    • James enrolled as a Private in Co A, 18 Regiment Illinois Infantry on 15 Aug 1862 to serve three years or during the war.  He was discharged on 8 July 1865 at Little Rock, Arkansas by reason of expiration of term.  His physical characteristics included: height 5'10", fair complexion, blue eyes and light hair, and was by occupation a lawyer.  On Feb 25 1876 he applied and recieved an invalid pension for necrosis of the lower jaw.  On the 16 January 1886 he gave a deposition in regard to the invalid pension of Leander Bradley, his cousin.  At that time he stated that his occupation was that of lumberman and his address was Grubb's Post Office in Jackson county.  He was a lawyer professionally and an ultra prohibitionist.
