  Jefferson's body was run over by a train in Arkansas. His wife Isabella sued the railroad at which time it was proven that he had been dead prior to being hit by the train. The general belief at the time was he was murdered by a local contractor, who had all the construction business in town until Jeff moved there. The contractor and family moved away from Imboden three days after Jefferson's death
