One family story says that he left home when he was 11 years old and went to Alabama. Another states that after his father's death he moved with his mother to Claibourne County, Tennessee, and then moved to Madison County, Alabama in 1808. Either way, by 1809 Henry was living in Madison County, Mississippi Territory (present-day Alabama) near Huntsville. Henry's name does not appear on the 1809 Mississippi Territory census, so he may have been living with relatives or with his wife's family. During the War of 1812, Henry served in Capt. Crawford's Company of Colonel Burris' Regiment of Mounted Militia. In 1829, Henry moved his family to Calloway County, Kentucky. Henry appears in County Court records as a witness on his father-in-law's pension record in 1832. Henry and Martha moved there family to Clair County, Illinois in 1837 or 1838. By 1840 they had moved to Jackson County, Illinois, settling east of present-day Campbell Hill. In March of 1852, Henry applied for Bounty Land and received 40 acres; three years later, in April 1855, he applied for and received an additonal 120 acres. On April 28, 1871 Henry filed for a Military Pension for his service during the War of 1812, however, his claim was rejected because he had not served the required 90 days. After the death of his wife in 1861 Henry moved in with his son John A. Loy.
