Robert Read, son of above George & Anne Read was born 19 Feb. 1730, prop. on Barbadoes. He married Esther Whitehouse (Whitehurst), daughter of Samuel Whitehouse and Sarah Nelson Whitehouse, dau of John Nelson, Sr. on 27th of October 1757 (from bible records) Cart. Co., N.C. "Robert Read, Sheriff of Carteret Co. Claim of 10 pounds allowed as Sheriff for year 1761": from N.C. Colonial & State Records, Vl. 6, page 739. Notation on flyleaf of Carteret County Deed Book H says Robert Read transcribed deeds in Book H. He signed deeds as Clerk of Court 1773-1776. Robert and Esther Read had eleven children: 1. George Read who married Abigail Wallace, 2. William Read mar. Susannah Smith & had issue James, Elijah, Kiturah, Holland & Sally, 3. Samuel Read who was in War of 1812, 4. James Read also in War of 1812, 5. Robert Read, Jr. who is probably the Robert who married Susanna Phusic 2-10-1801, George Read bondsman. 6. Frances Read who married a Canady, had 3 daus.: Esther who married Absalom Simpson, Sarah called "Sally" who married Jacob Rumley, and Abigail who married a Jarby, 7. Esther Read married Daniel Simmons of Jones Co. and had issue: James, Wright, Francis, Amos, Sally, Abigail, Esther, and Nancy who married Elijah Simmons, Jr. of Onslow Co., 8. Abigail who never married, 9. Martha (no inf.), 10. Nancy (no inf.), and 11. Anna who married David Russell and had 3 daus.: Sarah, Anna, and Esther, and two sons Habbakuk and William Russell. (Children of Robert and Esther Whitehouse Read are probably not listed in order of their births
