    • Harry T. Murphy, Sr., 88, of Murphysboro, Illinois, passed away at 7 a.m. Friday, May 3, 2013, at the Rehab and Care Center of Jackson County in Murphysboro.

      Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 6, 2013, at First Baptist Church in Murphysboro with Rev. Shaker Samuel officiating and burial at Pleasant Grove Memorial Park with military services conducted by the American Legion Post # 127, V.F.W. Post # 7190 and 2605, and the Jackson County D.A.V. Chapter # 69. Friends may call from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday at the church. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church. For more information, please visit www.pettettfuneralhome.com.

      Harry was born on March 7, 1925, in Murphysboro, to Harry F. Murphy and Rosalie (Loy) Murphy.

      He served in both the Mediterraneian and Pacific Theaters in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1943 to 1946. He served on the U.S.S. Canberra and he was a member of the U.S.S. Canberra Reunion Association.

      Harry was a retired Postal Carrier with the U.S. Post Office for thirty two years.

      Mr. Murphy was a member of the First Baptist Church in Murphysboro, a lifetime member of the V.F.W. Post # 7190 and a lifetime member of the American Legion Post # 127, a member of the Woodmen of the World, the Eagles, and the National Association of the Letter Carriers.

      Harry married Vivian Adkins on June 30, 1947, in Piggott, Arkansas. They were married for 65 years and Vivian survives in Murphysboro.

      Other survivors include three children and their spouses Harry T. Murphy, Jr and Doreen Murphy of Springfield, IL, Ruth Ann Cook and Pat Cook, and Frances Jane Reiman and Ed Reiman, all of Murphysboro;

      five grandchildren, two step grandchildren and two great grandchildren;

      one brother William "Bill" Murphy of Murphysboro;

      and two sisters Doris Pisciotta of Troy, Missouri, and Amelia McCoy of Murphysboro.

      He was preceded in death by one brother John "Hook' Murphy and his parents.
