The following is the obituary of Christ Menke from an «b»August 1899«/b» newspaper. It was sent to me by Rosie Stewart, Secretary of the Dubois County Genealogical Society.
"Christ Menke, one our oldest and most respected citizens, died Monday at the age of 61 years. He was a sufferer for the past two years of a complication of diseases. Mr. Menke was born in Osnabruck, Germany, and came to America in 1847 with his parents who located in Jackson Co., Indiana. In 1861 he came to Holland (IN). The deceased leaves a widow, who was a Miss Henke, four sons and three daughters, Mrs. Jacob Heitman and Mrs. H. Eggers, (my great-grandmother) of this place (Holland) and Mrs. Ch. Lauden, of Evansville. The funeral took place Wednesday from the Lutheran Church, Rev. Lowenstein officiating.
Also listed in the Holland news column were the following: «b»Mrs. F. Spier and Mrs. Ch. Otto, of Indianapolis, attended the funeral of their brother, Christ Menke«/b», Wednesday. Mrs. C. Lauden (or could be Landen it is hard to read in both places) John and George Menke, of Evansville, attended the funeral of their father, Wednesday.
