1. | Elmer "Happy" Arthur Loy was born 20 Sep 1899, Jackson County, IL; died Sep 1964, Murphysboro, Jackson County, IL. Notes:
(Research):Talked to Grandma and Uncle Bill today....got some info on the Ku Klux Klan connection. Grandpa was indeed part of the Klan for a year or so around WWI. Apparently there was a lot of trouble around prohibition, trouble-makers coming in from St. Louis, a lot of violence....At that time in M'boro, the Klan was more or less a young vigilante group trying to stop out-of-town bootleggers and control the rampant prostitution in the area -- at the time, apparently, the anti-black, anti-Catholic agenda took a back seat to more pressing problems. Grandma said when the Klan began to take on that flavor, Grandpa got out of it...as I said, he was only involved for about a year. So--rumor was right, and that's the story on it I have.
