(Research):Funeral Sunday for Alfred Loy
Funeral Services for Alfred Loy, 82, retired Murphysboro grocer, fireman, and alderman, will be held at 2pm Sunday at Meyer-Denny funeral home in Murphysboro.  Burial will be in Tower Grove Cemetery.  Loy died at 6am Wednesday at his home in the Harrison community north of Murphysboro.  He had been ill for several months. He formerly operated grocery stores on North Ninth streets in Murphysboro.  He operated  the former Gem theater and sponsored the construction of the Hippodrome theater.  He was a member of the Murphysboro fire department when the fire wagons were drawn by horses.  Loy was born in Ava on January 1, 1870, and moved to Murphysboro when he was only a year old.  He married the former Amy Burton in Murphysboro on April 1, 1891, she died in 1929.  He leaves:  four sons, Elmer A., M'boro, Charles E., M'boro, George H., East St. Louis, and Walter A., Detroit, MI., a daughter Mrs. Augusta McManus, M'boro, and two granddaughters whom he reared, Mrs., Jennie Holt and Mrs., Evelyn Brantley, both of M'boro.  Two daughters and three sons preceeded him in death.

(Research):The story told to me by my father was that Maggie was high school sweetheart with Walter Wine, but then he went off to WWI and was reported KIA.  She then married George Schaeffer.  After the war Walter Wine returned as he'd only been badly injured (gassed) and not killed.  Maggie then left George Schaeffer and married Walter.

Another version comes from Myrthel, she said that George was not a good man and treated Maggie badly, Maggie then left him and later married Walter.

Since Russell Schaeffer was born in 1911 it would appear that Myrthel's version makes more sense.

(Research):Talked to Grandma and Uncle Bill today....got some info on the Ku Klux Klan connection.  Grandpa was indeed part of the Klan for a year or so around WWI.  Apparently there was a lot of trouble around prohibition, trouble-makers coming in from St. Louis, a lot of violence....At that time in M'boro, the Klan was more or less a young vigilante group trying to stop out-of-town bootleggers and control the rampant prostitution in the area -- at the time, apparently, the anti-black, anti-Catholic agenda took a back seat to more pressing problems.  Grandma said when the Klan began to take on that flavor, Grandpa got out of it...as I said, he was only involved for about a year.  So--rumor was right, and that's the story on it I have.  (From Wendy Vincent Stoll via email 27 March 1995).

Laura Loy Dies in West. Friday Murphysboro Girl Expires When Father, Alfred, is Speeding to Her Bedside; Funeral Not Arranged. Laura Loy Harris, beloved daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Loy of Murphysboro, died at Colorado Springs, Colo., at an early hour Friday morning of tuberculosis. The father departed for the west Thursday on receipt of a wire saying the patient was nearing the end. He had expected to reach Colorado Springs this morning. The death message was received at thte home at 9 a.m. It is doubtful if the father arrived in time. The deceased, little more than a girl, went west two months ago in what was hoped at the time might not be a vain quest for health. She was only 18 years old last October 19th. She was born in Murphysboro and resided here all of her life excepting a brief period she spent in St. Louis. She married Harry F. Murphy on May 30, 1924 in Murphsyboro. He died November 26, 1954. Her children include Harry To, William H., John, and Amelia McCoy, all of Murphysboro and Doris Pisciotta of St. Louis, Missouri.

Mrs. Murphy was of the Baptist faith. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary 7190 in Murphysboro.

She died at the age of 80 in St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Murphysboro.

Geraldine Appel, nee Short, 89, of Belleville, Ill., born Sept. 9, 1921, in Willisville, Ill., passed away on Saturday, Jan. 8, 2011, in Edwardsville, Ill.

Geraldine graduated from Belleville Township High School in 1939. In 1942 she began her career with MAC, 375th Aeromedical Airlift, Supply Squadron, Management and Procedures Branch at Scott Air Force Base, Ill. She took some years off to raise her son and retired in 1980, having more than 20 years in civil service.

Mrs. Appel was an active member of Christ United Church of Christ in Belleville, Ill., for more than 50 years. She was the perfect homemaker, wife, and mother, always putting her family first. Geraldine was known for her ability to organize, and she was a stickler on the details. She enjoyed researching the family genealogy. She also enjoyed reading about the history and studies of other cultures. She had an appreciation for homemade crafts, including Christmas ornaments, and she made the holidays extra special with her decorating. In the summer, she enjoyed vegetable gardening, canning, and nurturing every flower and plant in her yard. She cared for and visited many ill family members and friends. Geraldine was very patriotic and gave generously to U.S. veteran causes. She was generous in giving to anyone in need. In her later years she enjoyed meeting with her high school mates, "The '39's."

Geraldine was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Paul B. Appel, whom she married in 1942, and who died on June 12, 1997; her father, Harold Short, who died in 1921, when Geraldine was an infant; her mother, Maude, nee Russell, Short Look, who died in 1984; her step-father, Stuart W. Look, who died in 1995; her older sister, Norma Jean, who died in early childhood in 1925; and her brother-in-law, Dean Lihs, who died in 2000.

Surviving are her son, Steven H. (Linda) Appel; a grandson, Jeremy D. Appel; two sisters, Mary Jeanette (Marlin) Simmons and Barbara June Lihs; a niece, Pam (Roger) Grebe; and a great-nephew, Ben.

Geraldine was very fond of her husband's family, both living and deceased, especially his sisters, Agnes (Gene) LeChein and Betty (Paul) Fries, and brother, Arthur "Bub" (Arlene) Appel, and the many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank Heartland Hospice and the staff at University Care in Edwardsville, Ill. And special thanks to Dr. Arthur Tinge at Christ United Church of Christ in Belleville, Ill.

Do any of you remember your dad talking about working at a munitions plant in St. Louis?  I want to say it was McDonnell Douglas.  Melba, his sister worked there as a welder during WWII.
After your dad and I were married, after his Farmer Store manager job.  He went to college for a short time at Carbondale.  When you (Jim) were born he was working in sales for a man in Chester selling (at the moment I can't remember but is seems like it was office equipment or something like that.  The guy went out of business and your dad did not get all his pay.
I think it was then that he lived with Phyllis and John and worked at the same place your uncle John worked in the office. He also worked in the office.  (Seems like he filled in for someone at that office and started at the plant in Sparta in the fall.) It was there I remember him telling me he decided the men in the factory made more than the office workers.  We moved to Steeleville apartment when you were 18 months old and your dad was employed by World Color Press. died at 4:51 pm on Thursday, March 16, 2006 in Murphysboro. Evelyn was born February 19, 1913 in Murphysboro the daughter of the late Alfred Loy Jr. and Frances (Buchmann) Loy. She was married to Elza Brantley on July 4, 1936 in Murphysboro; Elza preceded her in death on October 14, 1999. Evelyn was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Her goal in life was to make sure her family knew they were loved. She was 100% successful as she was a true homemaker. Evelyn was a believer in Jesus Christ and a life long member of the First Lutheran Church in Murphysboro. She was past President of the Lutheran Women and a member of the American Legion post 127 Auxiliary in Murphysboro. She actively assisted her husband Elza in the support of the Republican Party and loved every moment. Funeral services will be held at 2 pm on Sunday at the First Lutheran Church in Murphysboro, the Rev Franklyn Schroeder will officiate. Burial will follow at Murdale Gardens of Memory near Murphysboro. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 pm on Saturday at Crawshaw Funeral Home in Murphysboro and from 1 pm until the hour of services Sunday at the Church. Memorials may be made to the First Lutheran Church or TIP Hospice. Survivors include one daughter and son in law; Jama and Dean Berger of Murphysboro. Three grandsons who were the pride of her life; Greg (Anne) Berger of Edwardsville, IL. Brett (Jessica) Berger of Murphysboro, and Timothy (Kim) Berger of Murphysboro. She was born in Murphysboro, Jan 5, 1924, the daughter of Elmer and Virginia Rollens Loy. She married C. Geoffrey Vincent in 1947.

Harry T. Murphy, Sr., 88, of Murphysboro, Illinois, passed away at 7 a.m. Friday, May 3, 2013, at the Rehab and Care Center of Jackson County in Murphysboro.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 6, 2013, at First Baptist Church in Murphysboro with Rev. Shaker Samuel officiating and burial at Pleasant Grove Memorial Park with military services conducted by the American Legion Post # 127, V.F.W. Post # 7190 and 2605, and the Jackson County D.A.V. Harry was born on March 7, 1925, in Murphysboro, to Harry F. Murphy and Rosalie (Loy) Murphy.

He served in both the Mediterraneian and Pacific Theaters in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1943 to 1946. He served on the U.S.S. Canberra and he was a member of the U.S.S. Canberra Reunion Association.

Harry was a retired Postal Carrier with the U.S. Post Office for thirty two years.

Mr. Murphy was a member of the First Baptist Church in Murphysboro, a lifetime member of the V.F.W. Post # 7190 and a lifetime member of the American Legion Post # 127, a member of the Woodmen of the World, the Eagles, and the National Association of the Letter Carriers.

Harry married Vivian Adkins on June 30, 1947, in Piggott, Arkansas. They were married for 65 years and Vivian survives in Murphysboro.

Other survivors include three children and their spouses Harry T. Murphy, Jr and Doreen Murphy of Springfield, IL, Ruth Ann Cook and Pat Cook, and Frances Jane Reiman and Ed Reiman, all of Murphysboro;

five grandchildren, two step grandchildren and two great grandchildren;

one brother William "Bill" Murphy of Murphysboro;

and two sisters Doris Pisciotta of Troy, Missouri, and Amelia McCoy of Murphysboro.

He was preceded in death by one brother John "Hook' Murphy and his parents.

Mr. Murphy served for four years in the Air Force as a staff sergeant. He was honorably dischard from Langley Air Force Base in Virginia on July 13, 1954. He served in the 405th Air Police Squadron.

He worked at the former Edwards Hardware for 17 years and he retired from Wright Building center after 12 years of Service.

He was a member of of St. Andrew Catholic Church in Murphysboro.
