    She had a family bible from David Bell and Mary Read.
    Robert Read, son of above George & Anne Read was born 19 Feb. 1730, prop. on Barbadoes. He married Esther Whitehouse (Whitehurst), daughter of Samuel Whitehouse and Sarah Nelson Whitehouse, dau of John Nelson, Sr. on 27th of October 1757 (from bible records) Cart. Co., N.C. "Robert Read, Sheriff of Carteret Co. Claim of 10 pounds allowed as Sheriff for year 1761": from N.C. Colonial & State Records, Vl. 6, page 739. Notation on flyleaf of Carteret County Deed Book H says Robert Read transcribed deeds in Book H. He signed deeds as Clerk of Court 1773-1776. Robert and Esther Read had eleven children: 1. George Read who married Abigail Wallace, 2. William Read mar. Susannah Smith & had issue James, Elijah, Kiturah, Holland & Sally, 3. Samuel Read who was in War of 1812, 4. James Read also in War of 1812, 5. Robert Read, Jr. who is probably the Robert who married Susanna Phusic 2-10-1801, George Read bondsman. 6. Frances Read who married a Canady, had 3 daus.: Esther who married Absalom Simpson, Sarah called "Sally" who married Jacob Rumley, and Abigail who married a Jarby, 7. Esther Read married Daniel Simmons of Jones Co. and had issue: James, Wright, Francis, Amos, Sally, Abigail, Esther, and Nancy who married Elijah Simmons, Jr. of Onslow Co., 8.     George Read, son of Robert and grandson of the George Read and Ann Scott, was born in Carteret Co. N.C. 5 Jan. 1766, married 23 May 1790 to Abigail Wallace, dau. of Valentine Wallace and Sarah Shepard (Shepherd) Bell, widow of Church Bell. He was Clerk of Court in Carteret County 1803-1820. His wife had one son, David Bell, by her first husband, and eight children by him, as follows:
    1. Nancy born 14 Feb. 1791
    2. Sarah born 15 Aug. 1793 and died 22 Sept. 1802, age 9
    3. Mary born 21 Dec. 1795, married 12 March 1812 David Bell, who was son of Malichi and grandson of Col. Joseph Bell
    4. Robert read born 9 March 1797, mar. 1-14-1823 to Sidney A. Holton, died 3 July 1842
    5. William Read born Sept. 1800, married Charity Fuller Hatsell, widow of Andrew Lee Hatsell, by whom he had two daughters Julia Franklin Read and Charity Ann Read. Wm. died 1 nov. 1864;
    6. Esther Read born 1 march 1805, married 6 nov. 1824 Nathaniel Porter, son of John Porter, and had 6 children: John, Abigail, Esther, George, James, and Elizabeth: and died of pleurisy Dec. 1844 aged 39
    7. Frances Henley Read never married, was living with sister Mary in home of David Bell in 1850 census, and died 14 March 1858 of "bilious cholic"

    (David Bell and Mary Read Bell had all these dates in their family bible, which I have in my possession, as well as a list of the slaves of George Read which filled a full page.) The above George read died 20 May 1821."
