Eleonora (b. 1910) told Jane (b. 1948) about conversations she had with her Grandfather Ernst Rafert (1836-1929). He said that before they came to America he had to get up in the middle of the night and go into the forest to make sure their cows were safe -- it was very scary and his father did not want his son to become cannon-fodder. They were extremely frugal and very religious.
