  • Notes
    • (Research):Walt and a friend joined the Marines in World War I. He was gone to N.C. many months and then was aboard ship to go across when the war ended. The first time it was announced about the war ending was the middle of the night and whistles began blowing. Mom came upstairs to our beds and said 'War must be over'. The the next day it was announced 'not so'. But a week later the was ended. Then I worked at Indiana Dry Goods. We all left our desks and ran to the streets. No street cars could go for the crowd. Such cheering! Quite a few months passed before Walt came home. Then he was discharged with a lot of heart problems. He always worked at Sentinal Printing Co., but died in 1927 when Jean was 3 months old. Later Louis Schmidt married his wife Edna and the two children had a good father. I'll never forget my mother.... her crying in the cemetery at this burial." Alma Welp in Jottings.
