ARENDAL/ARENDELL/ARRENDELL
I am seeking information concerning the Arendel/Arendell/Arrendellfamily
of North Carolina. Descendants of this family migrated from Franklin and
Wake Counties, NC, to Carter and Johnson Counties, Tennessee between 1790
and 1800. I understand that there was an Arendell Family History published
in Carteret County, NC. Is this publication still available. Where can
I get a copy? Mike DeLoach
BALL
I am searching for any information on Daniel
Ball (b. 1728 in Carteret CO). His parents were James and Catherine Ball-
both of Fairfax Co, VA. James' father was John Ball, son of Richard Ball
whom several sources point as being the son of Col. William Ball of Barkham,
Berkshire. Thanks for any info. Randy

BARRINGTON
Interested in tracing pre-Revolutionary Barringtons in NC. In
particular, an Isaac Barrington who enlisted in the Continental Line during
Revolution in Carteret. His daughter, but probably sister or cousin,
married Isaac Edmondson and moved to Edgefield Dist., Sc, and finally to
Georgia. Thanks. Charles

BARRONTON, BARRINEAU
Could Isaac Barronton be the Isaac Barrineau I am looking for?
I have typed document that in 1746 Elizabeth Barrono (sp?) requested appraisers
for her late husband Isaac's Estate. In 1747 Court, John Isler exibited
inventory of Isaac Barrono's Estate. In Sep 1749, Mrs
Wilks is mentioned as administrator of the Estate. In Feb 1753,
Arthur Barrons (sp?), orphan, made choice of John Curruthers as his Guardian.
This indicates he was now 14 years old or older and his mother is now dead.
In Feb 1753, Isaac Barrineau, orphan, made choice of Lemuel Hatch as his
Guardian. This indicates that Isaac (Jr.) is now 14 years old or
older and that his mother is now dead. In May 1756, Author Barrins
petetioned for his part of his father's Estate. A hand written data
note states data found on p.64, item 42 in Cateret County. Also a
handwritten note states that in Letters of Demization and Acts of
Naturalization for alien on England and Ireland, 1701-1800, that on
June 24, 1703, a Benjamine and Mustavo Barroneau are listed. I have
data that supports that Isaac and Author Barrineau moved to Onslow County
and then to Williamsburg County sometime betwee 1790 and 1800. Could
the Private Isaac Barronton really be Isaac Barrineau, Jr.? Any help
on the Barrineau Clan will be appreciated. Barry

Searching for ancestors of Francis C. Bell, apparently born in Onslow

ca 1818, died ca 1858? He may be a descendant
of Eden Bell, born in Carteret County. Eden Bell is of the line:
George Bell d. 1722 Carteret County

BELL
I am looking for any and all information I can gather about the family
of Abner Bell. As far as I can tell, he was married to a Francis W., b.
abt. 1811, loc unknown. Abner shows up on the 1830 NC census in Carteret
County. In 1840, he and his family are in Lowndes County, MS, where they
remain until showing up in Oktibbiheh County, MS in 1860. In 1870, he and
his family are in Ellis County, Texas. I strongly feel that Abner's
parents and other family are from Carteret County. Up to now, I can't find
definite proof. There are 3 Abner Bells on the 1830 census. Who are the
other two? For that matter, which one is "my"
Abner Bell? I have examined a number of marriage records regarding
Abner Bell and none of them look like "my" Abner Bell. Are there other
Abner Bells involved? Here is Abner's family as I now know it:
Abner Bell m. Francis W. ??, date and loc unknown
children:
Cordelia G. , born abt 1830 in NC
Elizabeth M. D., born abt 1832 in NC
Cassan W., born abt 1834 in NC
Mary F., born abt 1836 in MS
Kettrell Shepard, born abt 1837 in MS
William R., born abt 1843 in MS
Abner S. Jr, born abt 1845 in MS
Cora W., born abt 1849 in MS
Preston Brooks, born abt 1853 in MS
As you can see, Abner and his family moved to MS sometime in the mid
1830's. Does this family look familiar to you? Do you have any information
(regardless of how trivial) that might point me in the right direction?
With all the Bells in Carteret County, I'm almost sure that my Abner ties
in somewhere. Thanks! Walter Fuller

Quakers, the family belonged to the Core Sound Monthly Meeting which was

BOGUE
I'm wondering if anyone in recent time has ever figured out how the
name "Bogue" became associated with so many things in your county.
The earliest I have been able to find it was on John Lawson's map of 1704
or 1709 ( can't remember off the top of my head). He usually names
things for whoever lived nearby, and I never saw a record of a Bogue around
Bogue Inlet (the first geographic location with the name) at that time.
The earliest Bogue I've found any record of was Thomas Bogue who was given
land for his service in the Revolutionary War. Kathie

BUCK, YATES
I am interested in the Buck and Yates families
of Carteret County, which is where I am from. I know that in the late 1800s
a Maggie Yates married a William Buck. They moved to Peletier. There is
a large, abandoned Buck family cemetary in the Croatan National Forest
near present-day Peletier. Bucks were in that area since the Civil War
because there are Buck gravestones dating to that era. By the way, Maggie
Yates was not a Yates by birth; rumor has it she was some sort of servant
girl who came by ship to Beaufort and was taken in by the Yates family.
She was probably not Caucasian. Any information on her possible origin
would be most welcome. Ann Meadows
CANADY/CANADAY/KANEDY/KENNEDY, etc
I am directly descended from an Edward Canady who lived and died in
Carteret Co. NC in the mid to late 1700's. He lived near Little
Deep Creek outside of Newport, and he died in 1799 or 1800. He was
my 4th great-grandfather. I have much information about him
and all of his descendants. I can't determine who his father was,
or whether he was related to Cornelius, Enoch, Thomas, Richard, Gideon,
Elijah, and several other Canad(a)ys who all lived in Craven, Beaufort,
and Carteret Co. during that time. I also have a lot of info
on Cornelius Canaday and his descendants. It is certainly conceivable
that Thomas, Edward, Cornelius, and/or some of the others were brothers.
So far, no one working on this, to my knowledge, has been able to get any
of these Canadys back to the next earlier generation. Speculation
is that they came from "Virginia." Finally, I have considerable info
on a James Canady line, who was born in the Carteret/Duplin/Onslow/New
Hanover County area of NC in 1808. Maurice

lived in Beaufort, Carteret, NC. He married Betsey Sampson on 12-24-1829.There

was a migration to AL. I have information on 1200 others, some born in

GOULD, POST, QUINN
David Gould was born 1793-94 in NC and enlisted from Cartaret Co.and
served in War of 1812. He was a Private in the company commanded
by Capt. Pinckney and enlisted on Jan 15, 1812 to serve 6 mo.
He was the son of Michael Saunders Gould and Betsey Post. His sister
married Loflin Quinn also of Cartaret Co. and served in same unit as David.
The Quinns entered land in Shelby Co., Ala. and the Goulds soon followed.
In 1826 David married Rebecca McAdams, dau of Thomas & Mary (Teague)
McAdams in Shelby Co. I am anxious to know more about the Goulds
and Quinns. Did all the family move to Alabama or were some left
in NC? Family tradition has it that Michael Saunders
Gould sailed from Spain (??) to Scotland where he married Betsey Post on
the day he arrived and sailed for New York the same day. (NY was too crowded
so they settled in NC.) Was Michael in Spain because he refused
to fight against the Colonies? Did he know the
Post family possibly in Scotand? David also rec'd a land grant in
Shelby Co. because of his military service. Several of his descendants
still live on the land. Many thanks! Edna

HARRIS, SWINDEL, WOOLARD
Looking for any information on Will/William Harris, his mother Margaret
Harris, and his sister Matilda Harris Swindel. We found the in the 1870
cenus in New Bern. The brother and mother were living next door to Matilda
and her husband Isaac Swindel. Isaac and Matilda are my great grandparents. He
was listed as a mariner in 1870. They were living in Beaufort County in
1860, and he was then listed as a sailor. We found a marriage in
Beaufort County in 1881 where Matilda married a Jame Woolard. No record
found after this marriage. She was listed as a widow. Isaac may have
been lost at sea sometime between 1870 and 1880. He was suppose to be the
master of his own ship. My questions are: 1. How can we find out
for sure if he, Isaac, indeed died at sea. 2. are there any records
of Matilda's father dying in Carteret County. 3. Did her mother and
brother stay in Carteret County after Matilda returned to Beaufort County?
4. Did the mother or brother die in Carteret County. We live in California
and it's not easy checking out the records of Carteret County so any and
all help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Ray

HARRIS(S), RUSSELL
Seek information on family of Mary
Harris (1791-1857) who married William Russell (1785-1848) on August 21,
1814 in Carteret County, NC. My best guess at this time is that she is
the daughter of Nehemiah Harris who appears in the 1779 tax list and 1790
census in Carteret County. He, his wife Mary and the below listed children
appear in the Core Sound Monthly Meeting Minutes (Quaker) in the late 1700s.
Nehemiah and Mary's children were: Anna (b. 1777), Josiah (b. 1779), Elizabeth
(b. 1781), George (b. 1783), Daniel (b. 1786), Nehemiah (1789-1794), Mary

LUCRAFT/LEECRAFT
I am trying to find out more about the family of Benjamin Lucraft,

His family is traceable through the census up to the mid 19th century,
but I have no other information about him or his family, or of the people
who worked for him, and may have been given his name. The name appears
as Leecraft in some wills which I have seen in your index, and I would
like to know how to get hold of copies of the information in them.
Other names in the family are Arendell, Taringham. There are three
African Americans listed in the Family Finder, to which I do not have access,
named David, Jane and Serinah Lucraft. I suspect they may be part
of this family, and its life. Can anyone offer help, or advice, please?

MACE
I may have an ancestor who came into NC in either Halifax, Carteret
or Beaufort County in the 1700's. His name was John MACE. How
might I go about getting more Huguenot information with surnames?
I have checked Cyndi's List and its Links. I found a listing of two
ships that sailed from VA to NC in early 1700's and they carried Huguenots.
But
John Mace was not listed as passenger on either. A written family
history says that John Mace was a Huguenot. He had at least one son,
Jacob Mace, a wife, and perhaps other family members. The family,
all but Jacob, were killed in an Indian attack. Jacob Mace was adopted
by a family named Cunningham and they removed to Hardy Co., VA -
now WVa. Thank you for your thoughts on this query. Susan

MASTERS/LOCKHART
Seeking descendants of Charles W. Masters of Morehead City. Charles
was born in NY State about 1868 to Henry and Charity Masters. At some point
in time he moved to Morehead City, so that in 1915 when the rest of the
family moved to NC, he was established there. I know that Charles had a
daughter, Jenny I think, who married a Lockhart and had about 12 children
of her own. Jenny was still living in the 1960's, but I never knew of her.
There were probably more children than Jenny....possibly sons who carried
on the Masters surname. I would like to hear from all descendants.

I am looking for information on Whittington Piner b1813. He married
Rhoda(y) Wade in 1835, Elizabeth Smith (bca1834) in 1849 and Phoebe
(Fiby) Ann Smith (bca1831) in 1872. In the 1880 census, he is listed
with Fiby Ann Smith as wife and Alonzo (age 7, b1873) as grandson.
We have copies of the marriage bonds, so we know the women are correctly
given as wives. Alonzo , according to his marriage license of 1899,
lists him as son of Whittington Piner and Fibie PIner. His marriage
was to Sabra Wade b1875. So he was evidently a son rather than a
grandson of Whittington. Whittington's first wife, Rhoda(y) bca1822,
was sister to Sabra Wade bca1811, and Drucilla Wade bca1809. They were
married to brothers Josephus Piner, Jr. bca1804, and Elijah Piner bca1806,
who were sons of Josephus Piner, Sr. bca1784. I can find no leads
on Whittington. Is he possibly kin to Josephus, Jr. and Elijah?
There was a James and a Thomas Piner in Carteret County in 1779 and a John
Piner in 1884, all from the Newport River area. In the census of
1790, in the Straits area, a Caleb Piner has two males over 16 and three
females. Any leads on Whittington would be appreciated. A footnote
to add to the confusion...on Alonzo's death certificate (1955), his parents
are listed as Whitfield Piner and Phyllis Proctor. The information
was supplied by his daughter, Lyda Piner (deceased) of Morehead City.

PINER
I am seeking information on any Piners in Carteret Co., NC. Records
show a Nancy Piner born 1792 and a Sarah Piner born 1802. As I have been
unsuccessfully seeking birth records and parentage for a Stephen Piner

time of his birth, I thought there might be a connection. I would appreciate
any information at all. Stephen has been elusive and apparently "untrackable"
so far. Thank you. Revae Leppanen

SINGELTARY, EASTON, GIBBS
John Singeltary was my thrice-great grandfather.
He was a sea captain for at least part of the time he was in Carteret County.
We know he was there during the Revolutionary War. We have record of his
being in the militia. Also Jean Bruyerre Kell's book, Carteret County in
the Revolution, mentions his being captured aboard a British vessel and
ransomed by John Easton (1782 or 83). He married Alice Easton, John's daughter.
After May,1792, when he mortgaged his property (Singletary/Ward house on
Front Street) to Nathaniel Gibbs, he seems to have disappeared. Incidentally,
Alice moved to Washington, NC, married Nathaniel Gibbs, and is buried in
St. Peter's Churchyard there. We do not know where Capt. John Singeltary
came to Beaufort from, nor do we know what happened to him after May, 1792.
We also do not know for sure who Alice Easton's mother was, although we
have found the name Esther in the record of a will. Any help will be appreciated.

TAYLOR, Great Dismal Swamp Canal
I am doing some research on a family who was very involved in going
up and down the Great Dismal Swamp Canal(s) to and from Norfolk, Virginia
and Carteret County, North Carolina circa the late 1800's and early 1900's.
I understand that there is only one 'lock' left to date. Does anyone
have any lists of really neat books that can elaborate in the history of
those canals? Or, does anyone know (or their ancestors mention) Captain
Maltby Taylor of Sea Level, North Carolina in conjuction with the Great
Dismal Swamp Canal? Thanks for any assistance ahead of time.
I'll be happy to do any SPECIFIC lookups or grave/cemetary tramping
for any one in Virginia Beach (Old Princess Anne County) or Norfolk in
exchange for this information. If anyone knows of this area, the
canals, or this man, please e-mail me at IQHOPE@AOL.com

WADE
I am trying to find some info on a possible relative
in the Civil War. James W Wade Private 1st, Co H 40th Regiment NCT (3rd
Regiment NC Artillery). Born around 1829 or 1830 in Carteret Co. He inlisted
at age 33 in Craven Co on Jan 20, 1862 and was mortally wounded in Fredricksburg,VA
on Dec 13, 1862. Prior to inlistment he was a farmer. This is all the info
I can find and it is a good lead, but I have had no luck so far. From what
a family member has told me, There were two brothers from France(I think)
who came to the outer banks of Carteret Co around the start of the 1700s
and that was how the Wade family started in Eastern NC. Thomas

WEEKS, O'STEEN
Phoebe O'Steen Weeks, born 1785 in Carteret Co.
She was the illegitimate daughter of John O'Steenand his wife Ada (Weeks)
O'Steen. She was taken and raised by Theophilus Weeks (founder of Swansboro)
and his wife Ann (O'Steen) Weeks. Her grave marker lists her name as Phoebe
O'Steen Weeks, which leads me to believe she was adopted by Theophilus
and Ann Weeks. Is there anyone who knows if she was adopted, or is there
someone in Carteret Co that could check records of adoption for me. I would
assume that she was taken in by Theophilus and Ann in her infancy. I would
greatly appreciate any help from anyone. Judy
