Dear Brother & Sister I once more imbrace this opportunity of Stating to you that I Recvd your letter the 4 of Novm, which was dated august the 26 that informed me of your health which I was glad to hear that you was all living and now I inform you of our health. My Self is not well nor has not been this fall. I have a bowel disease that Renders me a gradual uneasiness & misery & not able to do much labour and has no children to help me. My Wife has bin in a lowest of health for 12 months but is better at this time. Rebecca is harty the Neighbors is not well but better than in the first of the fall. There has not bin many deaths this Season in this place, Taylor Russell dyed last July & John McKinney was on the beach at work giting off a vessel the 28 of august and fel dead never spoke nor breathed. Jesse Weeks is dead, Asa Canadey in Beaufort, hay burn Piver, old Polly Gold, Thos Morton's wife, Nancy Hatcher, old Ms Noy. None married since A S Bell & Holland
But I hope those few lines will find you & family & all of the Connection injoying of good health we have had the dryest Summer that has bin in 10 years & good crops & the best fall for work I ever new Corn $2 per barrel on the sound on Whiteoak & trent 1.50 cents turpentine best 1.60 coffee 11 to 12 shugar 9 to 10 molasses 35 to 40 salt 35 to 50. This has been the best year fishing in 20 & no Sharks. I often think of you when I am eating of the good mullets & wish you had sum. In Respect of the money due you by Mr Canaday I dont Expect to even git. Last May Gov & I went to J W Bryant for advice as the Estate was said to be Exosted & he Requested me to let him have the power aturny & he would git the money he said I did not no how & for me to go to Newbern & he wold have it for me and I went the 21 of October and he had not Collected one cent. He told me that you had Recvd your part, he had sold Canadays bond & then stopped the procedures. I went to Mr Graham & drew $21 10 cents for your part of the house & lot and if the 15 dollars that Canaday was due as thought I Shall have that to pay my Self as I Shall for Sum others. I send you in this letter one Cape fear Wilmington bil of five dollars Number 1722 dated March the 1st 1839 and another bill of ten Dollars Number 5015 dated May 2nd 1836 And Dr Brother if I am Sparde in 2 week from this day I Shall Send you another letter with 15 dollars more & they will be Newbern bils and after that I dont think I shall be able to Send any more until Next Summer as I have the balance to pay my Self & have to build me Sum Sort of camp to live in for my old one is Rotten. I expect you think hard of me in Respect of the money but when I Recvd what I did Receive at first the bils was of no use to you. I Recvd 53 of J Adams 10 of Sol Bell 4.50 of B Higgens 2 of B Gearny, C Garner nor Glancy is not able to pay Claytons note, Wm Bordons I have to pay & So they Recvs. I have nothing more Brother particular to Rite you. When you git this if thers any thing that you wish me to Rite inform me in your next letter. There is 2 gentlemen as I am informed desirous to find out how to direct a letter to you. They was inquiring in Beaufort today where to direct their letter and they Cold not find out & I was there and they were too Stout to ask me. I Expect they are afrunted with me and is going to rite Sumthing to you about me and if they do please to inform me in your Next letter. Let it be what it may, for if any person was to Rite me anything about you or family you wold git soon as Riting Could pass. I ask them no difference if they will Come to my face if they have any thing against me. If they don't Rite before you get this when they do Rite me immediatly if you please, if they wish you to Rush it Sum it don't fail inliting me no. Nevill Russell was born in Carteret County, North Carolina in 1790 and died there in 1871. His older brother William was born on December 25, 1785 and, moved to Jackson County, Illinois in the late 1830s, he died there in 1848.
