Name: Eckert, John W Death Date: 20 Feb 1891 Volume: 25 Page: 163.00 Address: 1013 High, St Louis City MO County Library: RDSL 34
Missouri Archive: C 10390 SLGS Roll: 323.00
Probate case number 18256 date filed 1891
The probate case files run from April 28, 1891 to July 5, 1901 John's wife Anna Maria was the original Executor, but she died February 29, 1900 before the case was closed, so her son Charles had to step in and get it closed. Apparently John died with out a will. C. Kadell was Anna's administrator. The estate lists water bills for both 1011 and 1013 High Street (formerly 13th Street), lots 19 & 20 with one two story brick house on them. There is even a court order to the sheriff for Anna to appear and file the required inventory, the note says her daughter-in-law says she has spent some weeks in Belleville, Ill. That is where her daughter Elise Stolberg was living. There is also an affidavit from Frederick Perschbacker, lending credence that this might be her maiden name, he signs as security that Anna will execute the estate of John. A Conrad Lang also signs the bond.

He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, and cousins '96 Roy, Lorraine, & Diane. He will be especially missed by his good friend, Bob Rentfro, among others.
Charles was a graduate of Southern Illinois University Vocational Technical Institute. He served in the U.S. Army from 1952-1954 and was stationed in Germany and France. He was a farmer in his younger years before becoming employed as a highway maintainer by the Illinois Department of Transportation. He was affectionately known as "Gravy" to many of his co-workers. A stroke at the age of 59 was a mixed blessing for Charles. Though leaving him somewhat physically disabled, forcing him into an early retirement, the stroke brought about a renewed interest in his family and allowed Charles time to expand his knowledge of literature and history. He became quite the Civil War buff. Charles greatly enjoyed poetry and fine literature. A trip to his neurologist, Dr. James Metcalf, was more of a social call, as they shared and extolled the virtues of literature they each had read or were reading. Dr. Metcalf once said that Charles was by far his most literate patient.
Charles was able to strike up a conversation with anyone he met. He enjoyed going to yard sales where he often picked up good books, shared conversation with others, and met many new dog friends. Charles loved dogs and dogs seemed to naturally gravitate to him and adore him. Once he met a dog friend at a yard sale, he could pass the house two or three years later and point out that that was where Spot or Prince lived. He will be sadly missed by his ever faithful and loyal Chihuahua dog, Chuckie, who took it upon himself to remain vigilant and protective of Charles during his final weeks.

348 (Research):Col Robert B. Shackelford, of Cismont, Virginia, published his book--"The Shackelford Family", in 1940. In his examination of the records he went to great lengths to discover the origin of the family in America, and in his book he quotes letters from a Mr Anthony R. Wagner, of London, who made the search for the name over there. And among the many letters, wills, deeds and other records, Mr Wagner enclosed the Will of John Shackelford, a butcher of New Alresford. Will dated March 26, and proved in Bishop's Court, Winchester, March 30, 1647. And in this Will he mentioned his cousin Richard Shackelford and five children of his cousin John Shackelford, deceased. And the five children of the deceased John, were as follows:
(1) John Shackelford, baptized Old Alresford, December 23, 1647.
(2) Roger Shackelford, baptized Old Alresford, April 23, 1629.
(3) Charles Shackelford, baptized Old Alresford, January 25, 1630.
(4) Christopher Shackelford-baptized Old Alresford March 10, 1632.
(5) Ingram Shackelford-baptized Old Alresford, October 12, 1636.

Of the eighteen wills and documents sent to Col Shackelford by Mr Wagner, the name of Roger appeared only one time--that mentioned in the Will of John the butcher, of New Alresford.
